Hirtshals – Hanstholm Camping. 136 km
NR arrives at the port of Hirtshals 4:30 pm where HDC district Nord takes over. We follow the route close to the sea and passes the famous tourist area Løkken and Blokhus, both very crowded with tourists in the summertime.
From Aabybro we follow minor roads, passing Tranum and Fjerritslev. From Fjerritslev we take route 569 which is the old major road from Fjerritslev to the Thy area which is the target of the day. There will be a short rest for approx. 20 minuttes, close to the village Bjerget, where we can enjoy the great view to Lønnerup Fjord and Bygholm Vejler which are protected areas for birds and nature.
Afterwards we pass the Frøstrup Camp established in 1971 from hippies who wanted a place to live far from the established life in the cities. Today people still live in the camp in small cabins and caravans far away from the normal civilization.
On the right hand close to Østerild there’s a test center for the worlds biggest wind mills. Companies from all over the world use the test center in this very windy area of Denmark for testing mills, which are designated to be installed offshore.
From Østerild we follow route 29 to Hanstholm Camping, Hamborgvej 95, 7730 Hanstholm which is the target for today.
At Hanstholm camping we can stay overnight in our own tents or cabins can be rented. The place has 42 cabins in different sizes, but they must be reserved prior to arrival and best of all as soon as possible because the campsite is well visited in the summertime.
When booking cabins inform the campsite that you participate in the Nordic Harley-Davidson Run, and the manager will try to book cabins close to each other if possible. For cabin booking see https://www.thyferiepark.dk/ and because the campsite is well visited in the summertime it`s recommended to book as soon as possible to secure there’s free cabins.
On the campsite there’s a “do it yourself barbeque area” and we plan to arrange common dinner for the participants in the Nordic Run. Information regarding this will be prior to the arrival to Denmark.
Cabin booking see https://www.thyferiepark.dk

Hanstholm – Tingbjerg 369 km
( Hanstholm to Oddesund. 94 km)
Breakfast can be purchased at campground. We leave Hanstholm Camping at 8:30 AM and have a short break in Hanstholm for refueling.
Hanstholm is a rather new town established in the ninety sixties when the port was built on this windy place at the North Sea. Prior to this there was a small village where the fishermen hauled their boats up on the shore, but with the new port, a new community grew up and a lot of people moved to Hanstholm to work in the fishing industry and related companies.
The history of Hanstholm is interesting, and one of the more exiting issues is the period during the second world war, when the Germans build one of the important parts of the Atlantic wall in Hanstholm, to protect against an invasion from the allied forces. A big fortress was built on this place and the population was forced to move away. A lot of defense equipment was installed to protect 4 huge 38cm guns which was able to hit targets half the distance to Norway. 10000 soldiers lived in Hanstholm to operate the fortress and the area is still full of bunkers and other remains from the war.
The headline for the first distance today is the National Park Thy, which is placed from Hanstholm and 60km south in a distance from 5 to 15 km from the North Sea. The national park is a unique unspoiled nature consisting of dune landscape and plantations. The plantations were created more that 100 years ago to protect the farmland against the wind and salt coming from the North Sea. Prior to that it was difficult to cultivate the land here because of the powerful wind that dried out the farmland and because of heavy sand drift also destroying the cultivating. Today Thy is a profitable farmland because of the work done in the past to control the influence from the North Sea.
The National Park has a huge life of plants and animals, and is among others known for the discovery of the first wolf seen in the Danish nature for more than 100 years.
From Hanstholm we drive south along the dune landscape to the left which is the largest protected bird area in Europe. From Klitmøller, a popular place for windsurfing, called Cold Hawai, we take a short ride away from the coast through the plantation around Vandet Lake which is one of the cleanest lakes in Denmark. On the way back to the road along the coast, we see the change from farmland, through the plantation to the dune landscape close to the coast.
We follow road 181 south and when we leave the National Park at Vestervig, we pass the huge church which is the largest village church in Scandinavia. The church is known for the graves of the Danish prince Burris and his wife Liden Kirsten who was a sister to King Valdemar the first of Denmark.
After Vestervig the route follows the coast line of the Limfjord, which is the water that connects the North Sea to Kattegat east of Denmark.
At Oddesund the bridge connects Thy to the European mainland, we arrive at 11 am at Oddesund Kiosk & Bistro, Hovedvejen 6, 7790 Thyholm for a short rest and refuel for those who have an absolute need, before the next part of the trip, guided by District Central Jutland.
